Do It Foundation
Our Non-Profit
Founded in 2005 by developer and philanthropist John Scheman, the Do It Foundation is the charitable arm of the Scheman Family Foundation – a registered Costa Rican nonprofit dedicated to improving quality of life through access to health, education, and mobility.
What began as a personal response to unmet needs in rural schools and clinics has grown into one of Costa Rica’s most impactful nonprofit efforts. The Foundation works alongside local governments, hospitals, and trusted international partners to deliver hands-on support where it’s needed most.
A key focus of the Do It Foundation is mobility. In partnership with the Free Wheelchair Mission of California, the foundation has donated more than 30,000 wheelchairs – free of charge – to children, teens, and adults across Costa Rica and southern Nicaragua who otherwise could not afford them. These mobility aids restore freedom, independence, and dignity to those living with physical disabilities.

Our Mission
John Scheman’s Foundation also invests in education and public health, helping renovate rural schools, expand clinic services, and fund environmental programs such as beach cleanups and wildlife preservation. In total, the Foundation has touched the lives of more than 100,000 people through its programs. We have established strategic alliances with the Costa Rican government, Guanacaste municipalities, the Red Cross, Hospital Clinica Biblica, and numerous other national institutions in an effort to create impact on our communities.
Though separate from his business ventures, John Scheman’s Do It Foundation reflects the same values that guide his property development work: long-term thinking, infrastructure that serves people, and real impact at scale.
